The Shelter and Me

Tue Mar 10, 2009, 5:23 PM
Every Monday we get animals from the Local animal shelter for our program. Every Friday they go back. This is the cycle that goes on every week, unless we are not there due to holidays or finals. We do everything, restraints, draw blood, clean teeth, spay/neuter. It’s pretty much a win win situation for us and the animals. They are well cared for when we have then, and in return we get to learn and get to know the animal. This helps them to get adopted, because we have had them on kind of a ‘trial’ period and by the end of the week know their personalities pretty well.

The only bad part is, if the animals are sick when they come to us, or get sick (because kennel cough is prevalent at the shelter and has an incubation period of 10 days) the animals are euthanized because no one wants to take home a sick animal and the shelter cannot afford to keep/treat sick animals. That is the hardest part of all. And many of you might get mad, but please do not go on a rant about how bad euthanizing animals is. I see that it is not all bad and that an animal is better not being on this planet that starved or beaten. It’s the truth. I come to love many of the animals that came thought here, and most of them have found good homes.

Anyway…
Yesterday on my way home from school I saw some boys walking and there was this cat following them, or I thought it was anyways (mind you there are tons of stray Cats.) As I got closer, I realized that this cat was darting back and forth across the road, but inevitably, following those kids. I drew closer and watched as the cat came up to them and began rubbing against their leg and purring like a maniac. I paused when I reached them, looked down at the cat and then at the two boy. I asked if this was there cat and they said no and then asked if they knew who it might belong to and they replied no again. I couldn’t let the poor creature follow those kids across busy 16th street so what did I do..? I bent down and picked the bugger up. Oh he was such a happy cat when I picked him up, he just sat there and purred. Well I carried him all the back to my apartment and wondered what to do with him. I let him wander around the house (after checking him for flea’s… which I found none thank goodness) and decided it would be best to take him to the animal shelter since I already had a dog, cat and a horse at my parents house, they would not like another cat and I couldn’t financially take care of him since I have the other three already. I mean… my family really is animal poor  I went to the shelter with him and they were closed, so I went back to my apartment and came to the realization that my keys were in my coat that were inside the apartment. Needing to go to the store, I drug the cat there with me… but he wasn’t complaining. That cat was as happy as a clam. I picked up my roommate on my way back and she let me in. Mr. Kitty stayed in our apartment over night and he was the best kitty. I think he was just happy to have a warm, safe place with food. He ate a ton, and well he was rather underweight. He laid in my lap all evening purring up a storm until I went to bed and locked him in the bathroom since we didn’t want to take a chance of his spraying anything during the night. Well, he didn’t, he used his litter box, so I have a feeling he was someone’s pet. After school today I took him to the shelter. It was hard because I had already become attached. Knowing he is so friendly though, I am crossing my fingers and praying to god that he gets a good and deserving home. And they just swept him out of my arms like he meant nothing to me… it was kind of horrible. But I am going to be keeping tabs on my little friend.
They named him Alexander, he’s an flame point Siamese, probably a cross, with the prettiest blue eyes I’ve ever seen.

Shelters are bad for me… I always want to take everything home. *lol* or almost everything.
